Cooking for life - Rosa O'Brien

Rosa,

Your silent days remind us of the times,

You would direct,

The challenges around us,

And match them with your own:

which,

peculiarly,

Became us.

You would cook with a towel in hand,

To tighten the lid on the boiling water,

A pinch of salt, was all that was needed,

And a dapple of oil,

To prevent the Rigatonis,

From sticking.

We all were warned...

not to watch a boiling pot,

Yet, your silent years and protest

Drove you into the habit.

Often, I imagine you,

Imagining the seemed dreams of yesterday,

When comfort came in the loud voices of children,

And the strict grumble from your husband,

To command the end of the day.

You hung strong,

Not driving,

Yet,

Directing the traffic,

Wielding an Expresso afternoon…

A kind of silent prayer…

To do.

To Be.

(Family)

You leaned in hard on these children,

These children of yours,

And more than yours...

Some from the neighborhood,

Some from foreign lands.

You brought them ALL,

to the success,

Of another day,

You gathered them,

As if they were family,

Ready,

For a meal,

Some Rigatoni perhaps.

The waters Boiled

Barely over,

And we shall always remember,

The Towel around the top of the pot,

That helps to make the Rigatoni with love.

That Towel,

To some, a laughable Tradition,

While to others…

A time to be brave!

And stare at the Pot’s boiling,

Sometoimes to tighten the lid!

(With a towel if need be..)

To remember love,

(There is always room for one more,

and two would be more company)..

And family !

(Sometmes boiling over-

not to often..)

To remember you!

As Joy.

Ci Vediamo presto

Con tutto,

il mio amore,

Rose O’Brien

Much Love Ma ,
