Obituary for Theresa "Tess" Hopkins (Atzberger)

Theresa "Tess" Hopkins (Atzberger)
On Monday, July 16, at the age of 93, Theresa (Tess) Hopkins moved on to eternal life. Tess was born in what was then the small town of Central Islip, NY on Long Island on November 26, 1924. She remained there until her marriage to Douglas Reiter in 1946. They were engaged for several years waiting for the end of WWII. Doug was in the Army Air Corps.
Doug Reiter made a career in the Air Force for 21 years and for most of their marriage Tess and Doug never lived in one place for more than three years. They gave birth to two daughters--Terry LaMantia and Dee Reiter. One of the family's memorable adventures was a move from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Bangor, Maine. Tess and Doug decided to drive down the Alcan Highway and then across the continental US in 1957.
Doug retired from the Air Force in 1960 while in Texas and he and Tess moved to Windsor Locks, Ct. in 1961. They lived happily in Windsor Locks until Doug's sudden death in 1969.
In December of 1971, Tess married George Hopkins. Tess added two adult sons to the family--the late Peter Hopkins and David Hopkins. George introduced Tess to fishing and golf. Tess really took to golf and played on women's and men's leagues. She was especially proud of her hole in one! Tess worked in a number of positions outside her home, but she took the greatest pleasure in being known as the "Toy Lady". She started her toy business going door to door in Windsor Locks and Enfield. Her small business gave her great joy. Tess will be missed by her family--her daughters, her son, and grandchildren: Doug LaMantia, Chuck Tagliavini, Lisa Akers, Lee Hopkins, Michael Hopkins, Sarah Hopkins Fowler, Stephanie Hopkins, and Andrew Hopkins. She will also be missed by her many great grandchildren. She is also mourned by her nieces and nephews.
Tess was fortunate to have a wonderful circle of friends--some like family. In addition to her Connecticut friends, she corresponded with many of the Air Force families that she and Doug met in their travels.
Viewing will be Sunday, July 22 from 2-3:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
