Obituary for Martha Marie "Molly" Johnson (Mollenkopf)

Martha Marie "Molly" Johnson, 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at Brookhaven Rest Home in West Brookfield, MA after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was predeceased by her husband George E. Johnson. She is survived by two daughters, Alice Marie Woody of Knoxville, TN, and Connie May Johnson of Enfield, CT; a son, George (Al) Johnson and his wife, Melinda of West Warren, MA; and a granddaughter, Kristina Johnson of Enfield, CT. She was born in East Palestine, Ohio, the daughter of the late A.Earl and Florence Mollenkopf. Her life as child and teenager was spent on the family farm in rural Ohio. As a young woman she attended nursing training at Beaver Valley Hospital. After earning her degree as a Registered Nurse, she joined the United States Navy. She was initially stationed at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. She was then transferred to the Naval base in Trinidad BWI, where she eventually met and married her late husband. After serving for 26 months during WWII, she was honorably discharged. After the war she and George lived in various places, including San Diego, CA and Chattanooga, TN before settling down in Enfield . She lived here for almost 50 years and continued her nursing career at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford CT and Kimberly Hall North in Windsor CT. At Kimberly Hall she was the in-service director and a part-time supervisor until she retired.She loved to travel with her friends, visiting places like Australia, New Zealand and Iceland and many other locations both near and far. She was a member of the Enfield Quilt Guild and showed many quilts at the Big E in West Springfield, MA, where her quilts received various awards including a first place finish one year.She was an avid gardener and created and maintained many flower and vegetable gardens at her home. She was also a longtime member and supporter of the Hazardville United Methodist Church in Enfield.Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for calling hours from 6:00-8:00 pm on Monday June 25, 2018 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield, CT 06082. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the Hazardville United Methodist Church, 330 Hazard Ave., Enfield, CT. Please meet at the church. Burial will follow at Hazardville Cemetery.
