Joan M. (Abbott) Mayo, 89, of Enfield, beloved wife of the late John Mayo, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018 at St Francis Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 8, 1928 in Bangor, Maine, daughter of the late John and Winifred (Lousey) Abbott. Joan later moved to Enfield with her husband where they raised their family and resided for over 60 years. In addition to being a loving mother to her eight children, Joan was a second mother to many of the children in Green Manor. She was a master of many crafts including baking, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Joan was a member of the neighborhood sewing club, and a communicant of St Bernard’s Church. She is survived by her children; Kevin Mayo and his wife Kathy of Enfield, Joseph Mayo of Enfield, Carolyn Mayo of Newington, Patty Callahan and her husband Jim of Virginia Beach, John Mayo, Jr. of Somers, Kathleen Birkenshaw and her husband Dave of Somers, Karen Conlon and her husband Bob of Somers, and Michael Mayo of Enfield; her grandchildren, Tim Mayo, Jeff Mayo, Kristin Allegro, Matt Mayo, Jessica Conlon, Thomas Conlon, Lindsay Jones, and Ryan Callahan; three great-grandchildren, Tess Allegro, Milo Allegro and Owen Mayo, a sister, Maryellen Schulze of Orrington, ME; two sisters-in-law, Helen Abbott of Orrington, ME and Elaine Crane of Rome, NY, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Pat King, Fran Landers, and Cal Culumovic and her brothers John Abbott, Rusty Abbott, and Michael Abbott . Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave, Enfield, CT (please meet at church). Burial will follow in St Bernard Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, 8301 Professional Place, Suite 200, Landover, MD 20785.
