Bill was a member of the “greatest generation” as he served in the US Navy mainly aboard the USS Augusta in various offences in the Atlantic including the D-Day invasion of Normandy. At the conclusion of his time in the Atlantic, he served in Panama. He proudly wore his WWII Veteran ball cap wherever he went.At the end of the war, he worked as a telegrapher on the Nickel Plate Line while attending the University of Illinois School of Engineering. His work at a Mechanical Engineer leads to his position with Combustion Engineering and a transfer from Chicago to Connecticut.
He had a strong commitment to his community. He was the first Treasurer of the Enfield Hockey Association. He enjoyed many hours on the ice or on the sidelines watching his son skate. His constant work with the VFW in Thompsonville was recognized with a special ceremony and the awarding of a rare gold membership card. He was very sorry to see that chapter close. He was an usher at the 10:15 Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church as well as a volunteer at the Bingo games. He enjoyed being the “pizza guy” or “hot dog man” more than the paperwork he often handled. He volunteered for various duties at the Enfield Senior Center. He received a citation from the State of Connecticut for his 37 years of service as a counselor. He also served many years on the National Committee for Engineering Standards.
