Obituary for Eugene I. King

Eugene I. "Gene" King, 85, of Enfield, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 2, 2018, joining his beloved wife, the late Joanne (Caracci) King, on the 25th anniversary of her passing. He was born on December 11, 1932 in New London, CT, the son of the late Luther and Ruth (Fowler) King. He moved to Enfield in 1962 to make his home with his former wife, the late Sarah McDonald. Gene was a communicant of the Bethany Assembly of God in Agawam, MA, where he was able to show his passion for helping people throughout the many missions he was involved with. He graduated from Buckley High School in 1951, where he was the Captain of the State and New England Championship Basketball team, staying undefeated. He was recruited by the University of Connecticut on a basketball scholarship and played varsity all four years serving as co-captain his senior year. From 1954-1956 he was a United States Air Force Cadet until he returned to UCONN in 1956 where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Business. Gene was an avid golfer and fly fisherman, in which he enjoyed tying all of his own flies and making his own fly rods. Gene will be remembered as a devoted family man, as well as a determined person. Gene is survived by his six children, Lynn and David Mercier of Stafford, Brian and Ruth King of Suffield, Dana and Paula King of Statesville, North Carolina, Eugene King, Jr of Enfield, Stephanie Wakelin of Somers and Sloane and Wayne Waicunas of West Suffield; a son-in-law, Peter Wakelin; beloved grandchildren, David Mercier, Sarah Mercier, Peter Mercier, Nicole King, Will Knight, Alysha Knight, Zach King, Kevin King, Gavin King, Kassandra King, Kyle King, Alyssa and Tim Lord, Devin and Michelle Wakelin, Cole Waicunas, and Sydney Waicunas; and many fishing, golfing, and church friends, as well as his loving neighbors. In addition to his wife, Joanne (Caracci) King, Gene was predeceased by three brothers, Bob, Curtis, and Babe King; and a sister, Joyce King as well as his first wife, Sarah McDonald. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family from 5:00 - 8:00 pm for visitation hours on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield, CT 06082. A funeral service will be held at 11:45 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Bethany Assembly of God, 580 Main St, Agawam, MA. Please meet at the church. Fellowship to follow immediately after the service at the church hall. Burial will be private.
