Obituary for Nancy G. Pohorylo (Grondski)

Nancy G. Pohorylo (Grondski)
Nancy (Grondski) Pohorylo, 69, of Catalina Drive in Enfield, beloved wife of John F. Pohorylo, entered into eternal peace, Wednesday, (December 20, 2017) at Baystate Medical Center. Nancy was born April 30, 1948, in Springfield, MA, daughter of the late Henry and Retha (Neary) Grondski. Nancy was a life-long resident of Enfield and a graduate of Enfield High School Class of 1966. She graduated from Asnuntuck Community College with an AS degree in Human Services and was awarded the Broken Paddle award for community service. Nancy was employed as a secretary at Travelers Insurance in Hartford, secretary to the President of Rourke Eno paper company in Springfield, and secretary to Dean of Girls at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor. She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church. After her diagnosis with Lupus in 1985, she turned to volunteering at the local, state, and federal levels. She volunteered for many years as a parent advocate in the Enfield Public School system where she also founded the first talented and gifted program (EDGE). She was co-founder of the Fermi Safe Graduation Party and directed it for many years. She was the recipient of a commendation from Nancy Reagan and a proclamation from Enfield’s Mayor Adam Pierz for her efforts. She was named volunteer of the year by the North Central Coalition for Children and also volunteered as secretary for the National Purple Heart Museum effort in Enfield. Nancy ran a support group for Lupus and Fibromyalgia for many years in the Springfield and Enfield area. As her health declined, Nancy was forced to cut back on volunteering and focus on her family. Despite her declining health, Nancy remained positive, hopeful, and politically active. Nancy loved to travel to her two favorite spots, Ogunquit ME, and Martha’s Vineyard, MA. She loved nature, fields of cows, bird watching, ponds full of geese, and was known to yell "Stop the car" when she spotted a hawk or an eagle on a road trip. She loved waterfalls, the ocean, and coastal light houses. Nancy especially enjoyed organizing and attending whale watching trips with her family, friends, and classmates. She loved to cook, especially Polish food with the family. She was an avid Scrap Booker, and the family Genealogist. Nancy loved watching Hallmark movies and nature shows with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband she is also survived by a son, John Pohorylo Foerster of Half Moon Bay CA, a daughter, Christine Marshall of Enfield, her cherished grandchildren Canon and Sydney Marshall and Gilian Foerster, a sister Joan Malinoski and husband Phil of Port Orange Fl, a brother Thomas Grondski and wife Cathy of Mattapoiset MA, a special sister-in-law Diane Pohorylo of Suffield; an aunt Doris Donoghue of Boston, MA and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. A funeral procession will gather on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 9 am at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 am at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
