Obituary for Carmen Joseph Scavotto

Carmen Joseph  Scavotto
Carmen J. Scavotto, 92, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Born in the Thompsonville section of Enfield, son of the late Anthony and Rose (Nuccio) Scavotto, he was a lifelong resident of Enfield and grew up in the Park Avenue section of Thompsonville. He was a 1944 graduate of Enfield High School. Carmen was drafted during World War II and joined the Navy, shortly after he graduated high school, serving aboard the USS Liddle in the North Atlantic and the Pacific Southwest. He was aboard the USS Liddle when it was hit at Ormoc Bay, Philippines by the Japanese during the Pearl Harbor attacks. Carmen graduated from Teacher's College of Connecticut, now CCSU and received his Masters Degree in Education and Administration from Springfield College. Carmen was an educator in the Enfield Public School system for almost 40 years. He taught 6th grade at Brainard School and Hazardville Memorial. Carmen was the first principal of Enfield Street school and served as it's administrator for 34 years prior to his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Enfield Teachers' Association, the Connecticut Education Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of the Washington Irving Council 50 Knights of Columbus, the Rev. Kilcoyne Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, and a Past Faithful Navigator. Carmen was a ten year member and secretary of the Town of Enfield Redevelopment and Industrial Planning Commission and a member of the Enfield Society for the Detection of Thieves and Robbers. He was a communicant of St. Bernard Church. Carmen leaves his beloved wife of sixty- seven years, Jean (Cockayne) Scavotto, eight children Maureen and Robert Sampl of Enfield, Denise and David Thomson of Boothbay Harbor, ME, David and Laurie Scavotto of Winfield, IL, Mark and Lynn Scavotto of Somers, Michael and Robin Scavotto of Pembroke, NH, Ann and William Landry of Enfield, Mary and Keith Sanderson of Hinsdale, NH, Robert and Alouf Scavotto of Vienna, VA; twenty-two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, S. Patric Scavotto, and four sisters, Genevieve (Gen) Therrien, Bernadine (Bern) DeCaro, Natalie (Nat) Hanna, and Sadie (Sandy) Cavrelle. A funeral procession will form Monday, August 21st at 10:00 a.m. at the Leete - Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernard Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Hazardville Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, August 20th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
