Joanne E.  Chadbourne (Dixon)
Joanne Eva Dixon Chadbourne (88), of River’s Watch, Suffield CT, beloved wife of Malcolm Chadbourne, died Thursday, July 6, 2017.Born in Boston, MA on September 30, 1928, she was the daughter of Merton and Frances Dixon of Belmont MA. She was raised in Watertown and Belmont MA, summering in Limerick ME. Upon graduation from Belmont High School in 1946, Joanne enrolled in Syracuse University and Graduated in the class of 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree cum laude in Art & Costume Design. While at Syracuse, she joined the PiBetaPhi sorority, and an art and architecture honorary fraternity, Tau Sigma Delta.
Joanne married Malcolm Kallock Chadbourne of Limerick ME, in Boston, 1951. They had five children. They lived in Belmont MA until Malcolm’s employment required them to move to CT where they resided in Somers and then Suffield. Joanne utilized her formal education and her innate good taste in the design and creation of many items of clothing for her children and herself. Her tasteful talents continued in the interior design of all of her homes, which were always decorated beautifully. In addition, she designed and constructed costumes for many Somers Village Players productions.
Joanne will be remembered for her sense of humor and her unconditional love for her family and friends. She had a light-hearted approach to living, with a positive attitude in all situations and always delighted in finding beauty in all things. With a life-time joy in being a wife, mother, and home-maker, Joanne also had an ongoing interest in the author Louisa May Alcott and collected many of Alcott’s writings, always seeking her First Editions.
Joanne had an exceptional singing voice and prided herself in her ability to sing in perfect pitch. She sang with the Somers Congregational Church choir, Somers Village Players, and the Hazardville Community Chorus. Other talents expressed by Joanne were her ability to create beautiful calligraphy, and she was an excellent proofreader.
In addition to her husband, Malcolm, of (65) years, Joanne is survived by her children: Mark Chadbourne (Chestnut Hill MA), a daughter, Karen Korby and her husband, Michael (West Suffield), a daughter, Sara Moriarty and her husband, Tom (Enfield) a daughter, Jane Chadbourne (East Windsor), and a daughter, Susan Chadbourne (Enfield). She is also survived by her sister, Martha Hamilton Smith and her husband Peter (Limerick ME). Additional survivors include grandson Stanislaw Pawlowski and his wife, Jamie (Canton MA), grandson Thomas Moriarty and his wife Heather (West Hempstead NY), Emily Dyess and her husband, Derrick (Diamondhead MS) , granddaughter, Laura Moriarty (Enfield), grandson Paul Merker (Broad Brook), grandson Kevin Merker (Oneonta NY), grandson Nathanael Chadbourne (Chestnut Hill MA) and grandson Andrew Chadbourne (Chestnut Hill MA). She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Thomas and Eibhlin Moriarty, Natalie and Matthew Dyess, and several nieces and nephews. Joanne was pre-deceased by her brother, David Dixon (Limington ME).
Joanne’s family is deeply grateful to the staff at Suffield By The River, River’s Watch and VITAS Healthcare hospice services for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
Visitation information for friends and family of Joanne will be at The Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main Street (Route 190), Somers CT on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, from 4 pm to 7 pm. A memorial service for Joanne will be held at Somers Congregational Church, 599 Main Street (Route 190), Somers CT on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 10:30 am.
