Obituary for Jean M. Uchneat (Ahern)

Jean M. Uchneat, 94, of Windsor Locks, beloved wife of the late Joseph M. Uchneat, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Avon Health Care Center. She was born on October 10, 1922, in Holyoke, Massachusetts; daughter of the late Richard and Ellen (Pray) Ahern. Jean was a graduate of St. Joseph College, West Hartford, CT, Class of 1944 from where she received her undergraduate degree and Master's Degree. She retired from the Windsor Locks High School in 1984 where she was employed as the Home Economics Teacher for many years. She was a parishioner at St. Mary Church and was an active member on the parish council. Jean was a member of the Windsor Locks Lions Club and a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (2009) for her exemplary service both to the club and her community. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing and traveling. Jean was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by four children, Joseph R. Uchneat and his partner Kay Destephano of Stafford Springs, James M. Uchneat and his wife Catherine of Mt. Pleasant SC, Susan Buettner and her husband Jay of Avon, CT, and Barbara Pico and her husband Robert of Woodbridge, CT; six grandchildren, Katharine Pico, Christine Pico Warren, Erica Buettner Patrao, Cayla Buettner, Suzanne Uchneat, and Maxwell Uchneat; a great-granddaughter, Camille Jeanne Warren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Joseph, she was predeceased by a brother Richard Ahern and two sisters, Rosemary Martin and Katharine Paquette. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Monday, January 2, 2017 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, CT. A funeral procession will gather on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, CT. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial donations in Jean's memory may be made to Windsor Locks Lions Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 105, Windsor Locks, CT 06096.
