Obituary for Phyllis McCormick (Dyrdal)

Phyllis McCormick, 96, of Palm Coast, FL, formerly of Windsor Locks, CT, wife of the late James McCormick, Jr., entered into eternal rest at her daughter’s home on Saturday, June 2, 2018.

The daughter of Frances (Opatka) and John Dyrdal, and step-daughter of Miklus Polomcsak, Phyllis was born in Farnumsville, MA and grew up in Uxbridge, MA. She and James moved to Windsor Locks from Andover, CT in 1953.

Phyllis enjoyed yard sales and flea markets with her husband, James, crafts, and casino trips with her friend, Dottie. She was a skilled seamstress who also sewed for the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent and St. Mary’s Church. Phyllis enjoyed cooking and baking for her extended family and created elaborate cakes for First Communions, Confirmations and other celebrations. Gardening and being at the beach fed her soul and she was happiest spending any time out-of-doors. Phyllis was selflessly dedicated to her family. She was a fiercely independent woman, a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Bruce Rock, with whom she lived, a son, James McCormick, III and his wife Sharon of Carthage, NC, her grandchildren, Amy O’Keefe and her husband Patrick of Goddard, KS, James, Patrick and Elizabeth McCormick of NC, her great-grandchildren, Ashley Cannon and her husband Adam of Middletown, CT and (the athlete and future doctor) Emma O’Keefe of KS, and her great-great grandson, Liam Cannon, whose “gender-reveal” she watched with great anticipation. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 62 years, James McCormick, Jr., their infant daughter, Mary Ann, her loving son Francis McCormick, her first grandchild and “coffee-buddy”, Lisa McCormick, and her brother, Frederick Dyrdal, for whom she was a caregiver in his final years. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Margaret Kinzer (RI) and many nieces, nephews and friends. She leaves her “grand-dog”, Keegan, who was by her side constantly.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at 10 am at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 52 South Elm St., Windsor Locks. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Windsor Locks Funeral Home. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.windsorlocksfuneralhome.com
