Obituary for John R. Moak

John R. Moak
John Randolph Moak, of Somers, passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Dad left us to join his wife of 64 years, Dee who died two years earlier. He leaves his six children to cherish his memory: Nancy Moak, Patricia Marks, Susan Moak, William Moak, Peter Moak and his wife Marti, and Martha Farnsworth and her husband, Todd, seven grandchildren: Sarah Bryant and her husband Ben, Jeremy Marks and his wife Jessica, Rachel Marks, Callie Farnsworth, Sam Farnsworth, Joe Moak and Fiona Moak and three great grandchildren: James Bryant, Madelyn Dee Bryant and Orli Marks. John was born on September 7, 1925 in Flint, Michigan, son of Merrill and Thelma Randolph Moak. After graduation from Flint Central High School in 1943, John enlisted in the US Army. He served in the 347th Infantry Regiment, 87th Division as part of General George Patton’s 3rd Army in the European Theater. John then attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1950. There he met Dee Driscoll on a blind date. They were married on August 26, 1950. John was always employed in the food service industry, first at Pennsylvania State University and then back to Michigan State University. He joined the Saga Corporation at the University of Vermont. He managed the New England region and moved the family to Somers, Connecticut in 1964. Saga later became part of the Marriott Corporation; John retired from Marriott in 1988. John felt blessed in his life, and looked for opportunities to share his good fortune. He was an active member of the Somers Congregational Church and was recently inducted into the Backus Society to honor 50 years of membership. John was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Somers Rotary Club. He was a member of Somers Village Players since 1976, making occasional appearances on stage but best known as “Chef” for 23 years at the dinner theater at Camp Aya Po. John was a lifetime Boy Scout, serving as a leader and Scoutmaster of Troop 387. John was a member of the American Legion Post 101, proudly marching in Veteran’s Day parades. Upon retirement, John delivered for Meals on Wheels and was a Tuesday volunteer at Johnson Memorial Hospital for 26 years. John and Dee loved to travel and saw the world while visiting their far-flung family. He was an avid college football and basketball fan, following his teams, the MSU Spartans and the UConn Huskies. His family will remember his love of the family pets, epic camping trips, long dinners filled with laughter, and coffee around the kitchen table reading the newspaper and doing the Jumble. His grandchildren will remember early morning donut runs, riding the lawnmower, and pool toy relay races. The family wishes to thank his Care Team from North Central Hospice and his caregivers from Home Instead, who made his last days safe and comfortable at home. The family has been overwhelmed by the loving support from his church and neighborhood communities. A funeral service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Somers Congregational Church, 599 Main Street, Somers. Interment will be in Somers Congregational Church Memorial Garden. John's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main Street, Somers.
